During the long days of lockdown, Dan Monk discovered a YouTube channel by “The Burger Scholar” that sparked a new obsession—perfecting the classic American smash burger.

Crispy-edged, juicy, and unfussy, Dan’s version quickly became a household favourite and later earned a spot as the very first item on the menu at his family’s business, Site Zero Eatery. It’s everything a burger should be: quick to make, easy to love, and deeply satisfying.

To Dan, this burger isn’t just a meal—it’s perfection on a plate and a symbol of family comfort during tough times. It is his small but delicious way to share that comfort with others.

Ingredients for
Dan's Smash Burger

  • 4 oz ground beef (divided into two 2oz balls, I use lean ground beef)
  • 1 slice cheddar cheese
  • 1 Burger Bun
  • 1 tbsp Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp white onion, finely diced
  • 2–3 pickle slices
  • Salt & pepper
  • Other condiments to your liking

At the restaurant the works includes mayo, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, banana peppers, jalapeños.

How to Make
Dan's Smash Burger

  1. Heat your flat top or cast iron skillet to 400°F. Let it get hot for a proper sear.
  2. Roll the ground beef into two loose 2oz balls.
  3. Season the tops with salt and pepper.
  4. Place the beef balls on the hot surface.
  5. Immediately smash them flat using a heavy spatula or burger press (use parchment paper to prevent sticking).
  6. Press hard for 10 seconds to form a crust.
  7. Cook for 1.5–2 minutes until the edges are crispy.
  8. Flip the patties and place the cheddar slice on one of them.
  9. Cook for another 1 minute until the cheese melts.
  10. Toast the bun cut-side down on the pan with a bit of butter until golden brown.
  11. Assemble the Burger in this order - bottom bun, ketchup, diced white onion, pickle slices, smashed patties, top bun.
