My mom would make this crowd pleaser often and it is, to this day, one of my favourite recipes that brings back a lot of memories.

Ingredients for
Wine Goulash

  •  olive oil
  • 2 pounds of stewing beef
  • 4 medium onions, diced
  • 4 carrots, shredded
  • 3 large potatoes, cut into chunks
  • 1 big glass of red wine
  • 3 tbsp salt
  • 3 tbsp pepper
  • 2 tbsp thyme
  • 4 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1.5 L beef broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 cups all - purpose flour

How to Make
Wine Goulash

  1.  Heat up a little bit of olive oil in a deep pot on high heat.
  2. Add the onions and carrots and cook for a few minutes until the onions become translucent.
  3. Add all of the spices, except the bay leaves, and let cook for a few minutes.
  4. Turn the heat down to medium and add the meat. Cook until no longer pink.
  5. Add the flour and cook it for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the wine and let it almost entirely evaporate (a little bit left is okay).
  7. Add the beef broth, potatoes and bay leaves at this stage. 
  8. Place the lid on the pot and cook for at least 4 hrs.
  9. Taste, adjust the seasoning and enjoy.

Notes

Don't be afraid to add more spices to this dish. It will yield a very flavourful goulash. Also, add more water if the goulash seems a bit too thick.
